Jason Ware and the Deep Sky Imager

"The core of M42 is notoriously hard to image because of the great range of brightness levels. Revealing the core detail along with the faint outer wisps in one image requires wide dynamic range, this is provided by the 16 bit FITS data generated by the DSI.

I have been doing film photography for over 15 years and had not tried CCD imaging until using a DSI. The DSI has been invaluable for learning about FITS data files and the processing of CCD image. I am particularly impressed with the way the DSI control software can automatically stack images on the fly reducing noise and increasing sensitivity. The M42 image presented here was done unguided."

Core of M42
Core of M42 image by Jason Ware - Taken with Meade 152 ED 6" and is a stack of 25x30 sec exposures. "The image was done using the DSI control software set for 30 second exposures and the default setting for gain, offset and quality. A total of 25 sub exposures were captured. The software was set to save a 3 file RGB FITS which I imported into Adobe Photoshop for image processing using the NASA/ESA FITS Liberator plugin."
