Dave Trapani writes of his Saturn & Moons image taken with the
Deep Sky Imager and his 14" Meade LX200GPS:
"I own four CCD imagers that are considered Deep Sky cameras. Three
are rather expensive and technical to use, while the Deep Sky Imager
from Meade is very light sensitive and very capable of providing what
I need to image the faintest objects from my very light polluted backyard
observatory.(Only 20 miles from New York City). The feature that the
DSI has that usually makes me use the Meade camera while the others
sit in their cases, is the Auto Tracking and Auto Combining feature.
This means that I do not have to spend a lot of time stacking and
aligning frames of images after an imaging session. The DSI does all
of that for me. The Autostar Suite is so very well integrated with
the LX200GPS, that I was able to control the camera and the telescope
while sitting at my PC across the room in my observatory. It even
works on my wireless network on those really cold nights when I can
stay inside and control everything from my office. Great camera for
the money!
The Saturn images with the 5 moons was taken with the DSI in two stages.
First, I took an image that was exposed at about 1 second. This was
done to bring out the moons in better detail. The one second exposure,
while being long enough to bring out the dim moons, was too much for
the planet. The second image was taken at about .038 second exposure.
From this I was able to combine the two images in Photoshop and produce
the final image that shows nice planetary detail along with 5 moons
of Saturn. I then added the names of the moons in Photoshop as well."
