George Moromisato writes of his M42 mosaic taken with the Deep
Sky Imager and his LXD75
SN-8: "I had two main challenges in capturing the
Orion Nebula. The first was that the nebula itself is very big: more
than 60 arcminutes wide, or two Full Moon diameters. Since the Autostar Suite integrates both the Deep Sky Imager controls and telescope controls,
I was able to effortlessly create a mosaic by moving the 'scope and
then shooting the picture. After seven separate images, I had captured
the whole nebula. The second challenge was that the Orion Nebula has
a huge dynamic range. The star-forming central region is extremely
bright, while the extended mantle of the nebula is very faint. Fortunately,
the Deep Sky Imager generates 48-bits of information (16-bits per
color channel) and thus captures that whole range. I was more limited
by the colors available on my computer screen than I was by the DSI's
output."
