B33, "The Horsehead" Nebula in Orion. Discovered photographically by Edward C. Pickering in 1889, this famous dark nebula is a collision zone of two dust clouds and made visible by the impact. Estimated to be at a distance of 1200 light years, "The Horsehead" is an extreme challenge to the visual observer, requiring large aperture and perfect observing conditions. Tri-color image, using the Pictor 1616XT with the 25" Newtonian at f/5. Exposure data; 5 minutes in red, 20 minutes in green, and 40 minutes in blue.
