Q. How do I determine the magnification of my telescope?
A. The magnification of any telescope is controlled by the eyepiece being used and can be calculated by dividing the focal length of the telescope by the focal length of the eyepiece. For example; for Meade’s ETX80 Observer which has a 400mm focal length, with the included 26mm and 9.7mm eyepieces, magnification would be 15X power using the 26mm eyepiece (400/26) or 41X power with the 9.7 eyepiece (400/9.7). Most telescopes, including yours, have interchangeable eyepieces so the telescope can be used at low, medium, or high magnification.
Q. Which eyepieces have high magnification?
A. Keep in mind that the smaller the number on the eyepiece, the higher the magnification. Higher magnifications do however always cause the image to loose sharpness. The lower powers will always be sharper due to the effects of Earth’s atmosphere. Barlow lenses are rated by their magnification factors, commonly 2X or 3X. For instance, a 2X Barlow used on the ETX80 Observer with 400mm focal length and a 26mm eyepiece would calculate to a total magnification of 30X (400/26 multiplied by 2).
Q. What will I be able to see with my telescope?
A. All Meade telescopes are able to view the same celestial & terrestrial objects. Our telescopes can be used to view galaxies, bright nebulae, the Moon, planets, and the Sun with the correct filters. However, the clarity of viewing these objects will depend on various factors including:
- Light pollution
- Time of Day
- Magnification (Telescopes with larger apertures can give you better and useful magnifications which lead to better images)
Q. Does my Meade come with a warranty?
A. All Meade telescopes come with a 1-year warranty, unless otherwise stated. Coronado solar telescopes come with a 5-year warranty. Meade sport optics, binoculars & spotting scopes, come with a limited-lifetime warranty. Accessories come with a 1-year warranty.
Q. Where can I purchase a Meade Product?
A. To find your local shop that carries Meade products, please visit our Dealer Locator page by clicking the link or find the “Dealer Locator” tab towards the top right-hand corner of the page or you can simply go to our website and purchase from there.
Q. How can I photograph the image through my telescope?
A. The easiest and most cost-efficient way to capture your view is with our Smartphone Adapter. Simply attach the Smartphone Adapter to the eyepiece, insert your smartphone into the adapter, and open your camera app. If you’re looking to work with more advanced imaging with your DSLR camera for example, you can purchase a camera adapter (depending on your camera type) to attach to your eyepiece. For long-exposure imaging, it’s also recommended to use a telescope with an equatorial mount with dual axis motor drives.
